Do you struggle with bad body image? It is time to stop battling yourself. Here are three ways to overcome a bad body image day that lead you to feel discouraged and hateful toward yourself.
Step one is to practice neutrality. What if instead of saying you are having a bad body image day, recognize that you are a soul, in a body, and you are just not having the greatest day. Practice dissociating having a bad or good day with your body being bad or good.
Step two is to get out of your head, out of your body, and into the present moment. It is really hard to focus on what you are feeling that is negatively associated with your body when you are fully present and engaged with friends or family. Dance, sing, practice yoga, and breath. Place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly, and allow yourself to come into your space.
Step three is to sit with your feelings. Breathing through negative emotions is the best way to cope with them. The truth is, we cannot run from guilt or shame, so the best way to deal with emotions is to sit with them without trying to hide what we are going through. The more we run, the more we experience "emotion stacking".
Next time you feel uncomfortable in your body, take the time to explore what might be going on for you emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
